Cheap Drop Cloth Curtains

I wanted/needed curtains in my living room. A long time ago, I saw somewhere online where someone used canvas drop cloths as curtains. Since I have a huge sliding glass door in my living room, I thought this would be cheap and easy. I bought two 6 ft x 9 ft canvas drop cloths at Lowes for $10.98 each, and they've been sitting in my linen closet for well over 8 months (if not longer).

Well, now that I have a tall, dark and handsome boyfriend (ok, only the tall was needed for this, but it doesn't hurt that he's also nice to look at), I decided to put him to good use. I had him hang the curtain rods that have been sitting around for as long as the drop cloths, and then, just to see how it would work, he draped the cloths over the rods for me.

Not bad! Actually better than I thought they would look! We both even agreed that we liked the possibility of a built-in valance. Especially since that meant no cutting necessary.

My plan is to dye and wash them first because they will probably shrink. Then, I have to figure out how to sew them. If you know me, that's not a skill I am very strong in. But, we will see how it goes.

I was also thinking of embroidering some big flowers on the curtains. Maybe using dyed shoelaces or ribbon! Oh, my mind is whirling with ideas.   Any ideas of your own are welcome.
