A Haunted Halloween at Colonial Williamsburg

Haunting on DoG Street (Duke of Gloucester) is in full effect at Colonial Williamsburg through the 31st.  I took a stroll through the streets before opening hours this morning. 

Boy was it spooky. I hope I can sleep tonight.

Today was a beautiful morning at Colonial Williamsburg.
The light was amazing, and I felt like I was in a fairytale.
Does anyone else ever feel like they can't handle all the beauty?
I don't know how to explain it. It was so pretty that it hurt.

It's a New Year

Happy New Year! 

I felt I should post a current photo to reflect the season, since the last time I posted was at Halloween. I have tons of Christmas decorations I photographed to post here, but it's too late now. I'm past that. Maybe next Christmas. 

For now, here's a frosty photo from our January 2013 Honeymoon in Paris, Virginia. It was taken nearby at Sky Meadows State Park, which I would love to go back and visit in the springtime. ▼

We have big snow expected for our region of Virginia. My husband just informed me it now has a name, "Winter Storm Helena", as he pondered, "When did snow storms get names?" That I do not know, but he also tells me that Jim Cantore is coming to the area to cover it for The Weather Channel. Should be interesting.

Okay. One more, and then I swear, I am getting off this computer. This is our small Colonial Williamsburg Village. Dept 56 has retired them, so they are hard to come by. ▼

It's Time For Spring!

Here's a little walk we took through Colonial Williamsburg yesterday. 

I love CW and we go there a lot. 

No matter how many times I've been there I still see an interesting view I hadn't noticed before.

It was a perfect weather day, about 70 degrees. 

If only it could always be this perfect. 

I'll just try to soak it all in as best I can, 

because hot and humid weather is right around the corner.

These Trees

I have been passing by these trees for years. Every time I do, I tell myself that I will photograph them from the perfect vantage point in all four seasons.  I have yet to do so.

I don't know exactly what it is about them.
They are especially sculptural at this time of year,
but really, they stand out in all seasons. 

I think I might even have some photos of them that were taken years ago with my film camera.
It will take some digging to find that out.

I don't even know what kind of trees they are. Sycamores? 

I do love seeing them, though.
They are like old friends.
If you ever find yourself on the corner of Francis Street and S Nassau Street in Williamsburg,
maybe you, too, will see why I like them so much.

History In Miniature at Colonial Williamsburg

I know there are dollhouse fans and lovers of all things miniature out there, and this post is just for you.  My husband and I visited the new exhibition, The World Made Small, at the Dewitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum in Colonial Williamsburg this past weekend. The exhibit runs through September 7th for anyone interested in checking it out. 

"Dollhouses are some of the most popular miniature versions of the real world. On view will be a museum favorite—the enormous Long Island Dollhouse made around 1900 which is fully furnished. The earliest dollhouse in the exhibit was made in 1820 for twin girls. Other houses include a house made in the Chesapeake around 1835 and a colonial revival house made around 1940. While young girls played house, what about the young boys? Wonderful German-made playsets from the 19th century will be featured including a fort, a soldiers’ campsite and a farm." 

I love this fireplace with what looked like a handpainted scene above the mantle. ^

Can you see the gentle giant peeking in the window above? ^

I think this little kitchen was my favorite of the day. 

Couldn't you just imagine you are standing in a real kitchen looking at these closeups? 

Now that was my kind of exhibit. I wanted to take it all home with me.
